The Haunted House
It was a moonlit night as Chibu drove through the dimly lit streets, a bag of piping hot food securely fastened in his passenger seat. Suddenly, his GPS directed him to a rather eerie-looking house nestled amidst overgrown trees. The creaking gate and flickering porch light sent shivers down his spine, but duty called, and Chibu summoned his courage.
As he approached the front door, a gust of wind rattled the windows, causing Chibu to jump. The wind blowing through the trees and the echo of his own footsteps on the pavement made him very uneasy. He took a deep breath, reminding himself it was just his imagination playing tricks. With a trembling hand, he reached out to ring the doorbell, but before he touched it he distinctly heard childlike laughter, as if a group of kids were standing right behind him. He tensed up and prepared to turn around to see who was giggling when the door swung open, revealing an elderly woman with wild hair and an eccentric smile. "Welcome, young dasher," she croaked in a peculiar tone. "You've arrived just in time for dinner."
Chibu couldn't help but notice the peculiar decor inside—the walls adorned with cobwebs, flickering candles casting eerie shadows. It looked like a scene straight out of the Addams family, he even caught a glimpse of a dust covered organ in the background. However, he shrugged it off, assuming it was just the woman's unique taste. As he handed over the food, Chibu felt a chill run down his spine. The woman's eyes seemed to glow momentarily, and her voice took on an otherworldly tone. He was reminded of the scene from Ghostbusters where Sigourney Weavers character is possessed by a demon. "Enjoy your tip, dear dasher," she whispered, handing him a small, mysterious package.
"Thank you very much ma'am and enjoy your evening" Chibu said with a nervous smile on his face. Curiosity piqued, Chibu thanked the woman and hurriedly left. He turned as he opened his driver door and the porch was completely dark again but he could see the old woman waving extremely slowly, as if she were a beauty pageant contestant, only now she was in the second floor window. "How the hell did she get up there so fast?" Chibu thought to himself. Driving away from the haunted house, he couldn't shake off the feeling of being watched. Shadows danced around him, and the wind whispered eerie secrets in his ears. Suddenly, a loud crash echoed behind him, causing Chibu to lose his focus, scream and almost drive off the road. Heart pounding, he turned to see the mysterious package had popped open on the seat beside him, seemingly on its own. His fear turned to laughter as he realized that the package was actually a mischievous toy, wobbling and spinning autonomously. With a sigh of relief, Chibu picked up the box and examined the toy more closely, a note fell out. It read,
"Congratulations on surviving my haunted house prank! Enjoy a good laugh on me, Chibu!” -Erin
Through fits of laughter, Chibu realized that the eccentric woman had orchestrated the entire spooky encounter as a playful joke. He couldn't help but admire her creativity and mischievous spirit. Although, his smile faded as he finally hit the delivered button on the doordash app and realized the prank must have been in lieu of a tip, but just as he started to feel bad a notification came through the app this time. “A customer has added a 10 dollar tip to your last delivery.” And so, Chibu's nightly delivery adventure took a thrilling turn from fright to laughter. From the haunted house to the mysterious package, it was a rollercoaster ride of emotions that left him with a heart full of laughter and a story to share with his fellow dashers.
